During events El Nino (which correspond to a warm surface water anomaly in the center of the equatorial Pacific Ocean), there is an excess of major cyclones over the entire Pacific. Conversely, the years La Nina are marked by less cyclonic activity in this region.
El Nino and La Nina are of the phenomena climate which have for origin a significant temperature anomaly of the surface waters of the South Pacific Ocean.
El Nino returns every 2 to 7 years to the Pacific Ocean. Winds that normally blow westerly, pushing warm waters towards Australia and Indonesia, are weakening or reversing.
Warm air from the earth tends to rise, creating an area of local low pressure at ground level. This creates an extremely constant draft and wind breath then from the sea to the land because in the tropics the air circulation undergoes little disturbance, unlike at higher latitudes.
The Indian monsoon is the largest of the monsoon systems in the world and mainly affects India and its neighbors Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Monsoon refers to the seasonal wind from the Indian Ocean and South Asia, which blows from the southwest in summer and from the northeast in winter.
Monsoon impacts in Indian culture and economy. The summer monsoon gives eighty percent of the total rainfall in the affected areas. The return of the monsoon punctuates an uneven weather since, from one year to another, the rains have a different duration and intensity.
The southwest monsoon is the main means of irrigation for a large majority of Indian farmers and its progress is therefore carefully studied each year. From April, the Indian Meteorological Institute (IMD) and the private body, Skymet, announce their forecasts for the arrival and intensity of the monsoon.
Due to its effects on agriculture, flora and fauna and other economic, social and environmental effects – the monsoon is one of the most anticipated, followed and studied weather phenomena in the region. The southwest summer monsoons occur from July to September.
